Buttons of the Left is an archive and educational project focused on the ephemeral materials used to educate, agitate, and organize for progressive change. We collect and preserve buttons as important artifacts of working class history, share the context and meaning behind each item, and curate topical exhibits and presentations to connect with students, workers, and the public. We’re always accepting donations from individuals and organizations.

Our archive is a unique record of the items that have been used by grassroots activists from the 19th century through the present. We’ve prepared museum and gallery-style exhibits for conferences, bookstores, cafes, and offices that highlight the design, history, and meaning of buttons and other artifacts of working class organization.
